What is a 1099-Misc form?
The Form 1099-MISC is an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) tax return document used to report miscellaneous payments made to non employee individuals, such as independent contractors, during the calendar year.

Why did I receive a 1099-Misc?
You received a 1099-Misc form because you were paid as a subcontractor for work that you performed.  This type of income is also called non-employee compensation.

Is my income taxable?
You will use IRS Schedule C to determine how much of your earnings are taxable.  This income is subject to Federal Income Tax, Social Security Tax, and State Tax.

Do I need to file a tax return?
You have to file an income tax return if your net earnings from self-employment were $400 or more. If your net earnings from self-employment were less than $400, you still have to file an income tax return if you meet any other filing requirements.

What if I got more than one or several forms?
You will file just one tax return which should include all of your income.  The non-employee compensation should be grouped by type of business, for instance if you had self-employment income from doing construction work and other self-employment income from cake decorating you would complete two schedules Cs, one for each endeavor.
